DEFINITIONS

FIBROMYALGIA

FIBRO - connective tissue (i.e. tendons and ligaments)

MY - muscle

ALGIA - pain

In other words – muscle pain!

DIAGNOSTIC CRITERIA

    • Widespread muscular aches and pains
    • 11 or more out of 18 specified "tender points"

TENDER POINTS

    • areas of increased sensitivity to pressure over well-defined anatomical areas of the body
    • enable physician to diagnose fibromyalgia objectively and accurately
    • usually not located in areas the patient is complaining about
    • locations are identical for all people with fibromyalgia, but number may vary from person to person
    • enable fibromyalgia to be diagnosed by its own characteristics rather than by the absence of other recognizable conditions

PRIMARY VS CONCOMITANT FIBROMYALGIA

    • features of each essentially identical
    • PRIMARY FIBROMYALGIA occurs without other significant health problems
    • CONCOMITANT FIBROMYALGIA occurs when other significant health problems are present such as osteoarthritis of the hip or knee, for example. Since this arthritic condition cannot explain the fibromyalgia symptoms, these cases are now known as concomitant. Appropriate treatment for each will need to be prescribed.

NON-RESTORATIVE SLEEP

    • THIS IS NOT INSOMNIA. There are scientifically proven differences in sleep quality between people with fibromyalgia and people with insomnia.
    • Stage 4 delta sleep is deep non-dreaming sleep and is severely disturbed in people with fibromyalgia
    • Result is a very unrefreshing sleep from which people with fibromyalgia awaken feeling achy, stiff and exhausted
