Stargate SG-1 is a science fiction television series which follows the adventures of a top secret military team, SG-1, as they travel through a portal called the "Stargate".
Stargate SG-1 is based upon the feature film "Stargate", created by Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich ("Independence Day", "Godzilla"). The series, however, was created by Jonathan Glassner and Brad Wright (whose credits include producing and writing on "The Outer Limits") and stars Richard Dean Anderson ("MacGyver").
Stargate SG-1 is currently being shown in four countries and syndication of the series is set to begin during the fall of 1998.
2. Where can I see Stargate SG-1?
Stargate SG-1 is currently shown in the United States on the cable station Showtime. SG-1 airs every Friday night at 10PM with re-runs that episode airing the following Monday at 8PM.
FOX has already bought syndication rights to air Stargate SG-1 during the Fall 1998 television season. FOX will air SG-1 on 14 stations nation wide starting in the Fall of 1998, check your local listings for air times and dates.
Stargate SG-1 is being shown on the WIC Network in Canada. Originally the schedule had SG-1 airing at set times but because of complications various stations in Canada have switched air dates and times. Check in with your local WIC Network to find out exactly when SG-1 airs for you.
Stargate SG-1 is shown in Australia every Wednesday night at 8:30PM on Channel 7.
Stargate SG-1 is featured as a part of the "MGM Gold" Cable Station launched in Brazil. SG-1 airs weekly in Brazil, check with "MGM Gold" for air dates and times.
The pilot episode of Stargate SG-1, "Children Of The Gods", will shortly be released on video in the United States and Canada through Orion Home Video. Few details to the videos exact release date and if the video will be available in other countries where SG-1 is shown are known currently, so keep your eyes peeled.
3. Who is behind Stargate SG-1?
The original "Stargate" concept was devised by Dean Devlin and Rolland Emmerich. Devlin was Executive Producer on the "Stargate" movie while Emmerich directed, both wrote the storyline. In the fall of 1996 MGM/UA announced its plans to take the "Stargate" property and turn it into a television series. "Stargate SG-1" is the last of a three series deal Showtime Inc. made with MGM, the previous two series being "The Outer Limits" and "Poltergeist: The Legacy".
For the series MGM brought in the creative talents of Jonathan Glassner and Brad Wright, who previously worked on "The Outer Limits" for MGM, to create storylines and producer the show. Both Glassner and Wright are listed as Executive Producers on the series, with Michael Greenburg and Jeff King and Co-Executive Producers, and are responsible for most of the storylines in the show.
4. What differences are there between SG-1 and the movie?
For the most part the series "Stargate SG-1" has remained faithful to storylines put forth by the 1994 feature film "Stargate". However there are several major plot differences that one should take note of.
In the feature the Stargate only went to one planet, Abydos. In the series the Stargate reaches thousands of planets, explanation in the pilot "Children Of The Gods".
In the feature Stargate the alien Ra is said to be parasitic, inhabiting a human's body, which looks like a short version of the aliens commonly seen by those who say they have been abducted by aliens (Greys). The series plays on the parasitic notion of Ra's species and names Ra's species "Goa'uld" which look like large parasitic worms.
In the feature Ra is a member of a dying race, in the series the Goa'uld seem to be, for the most part, thriving.
Dean Devlin and Rolland Emmerich, creators of the feature film "Stargate", claim that they had planned a trilogy of films based on "Stargate". MGM however, would not sponsor another "Stargate" film or distribute it which was a problem for Devlin and Emmerich because MGM owned the rights to the "Stargate" franchise. Upon MGM's announcement that they would be making a Stargate television series Devlin and Emmerich refused to be involved. MGM went through with the series anyway and Devlin and Emmerich continue to express their disapproval over the series in many of the interviews they are in.
5. How Does The Stargate Work?
Think of the Stargate as a telephone. First of all you need two telephones to make a connection. Each Stargate has numerous symbols, like numbers on a telephone, that you can dial to get another Stargate. The symbols are dialed via the "Dial Home Device" (DHD). On each Stargate the 7th Symbol you dial is called the point of origin, a symbol that identifies where in the universe the Stargate you are using is. Once another Stargate is successfully dialed a stable wormhole is created between the two Stargates allowing for instantaneous travel between the two Stargates.
The Dial Home Device was missing from the Stargate unearthed in Giza Egypt which is why they use computers to dial the Stargate at Stargate Command.
Some planets where there were once Stargates are unreachable because of the expanding universe model. In the expanding universe model the universe is constantly expanding, thus a Stargate placed on a planet at the edge of the universe will not be in the same place it was thousands of years ago because the planet's location has shifted. Therefore only the planets closest to the center of the universe are able to be traveled to because these planets have shifted the least.

The creators of Stargate SG-1, Jonathan Glassner and Brad Wright, both have access to the internet and check the SG-1 Pages as well as the alt.tv.stargate-sg1 newsgroup regularly. Unfortunately there is no direct way to contact them but more likely than not they will see your comments if you post them to the newsgroup or on a message board.
Jonathan Glassner has set up a private address for correspondence with Sean Fitzgibbons (fan, founder of SG-1.Net). Every so often Jonathan Glassner will mail Sean, or Sean will mail him, to confirm, deny, or not comment on rumors. If you pose an interesting question to the newsgroup Sean just might ask Jonathan Glassner about it.
If you wish to get in touch with anyone from Stargate SG-1 through regular mail you can E-Mail Showtime Online and request an address to mail the show at. Showtime Online's E-Mail address is listed below.

8. Miscellaneous Info
Stargate SG-1 has an international and quickly growing fan following. Since Stargate SG-1 airs in the USA, Canada, Australia, and Brazil many fans you meet will not be from the same country as yourself. You will meet many fans from around the world but you also must consider where they are in the SG-1 season since every country began showing the series at different times. So SG-1 fans, or Gaters, always have been to extra careful not to give out episode spoilers to those who do not want them.
The founding of the alt.tv.stargate-sg1 newsgroup has created the most centralized and popular SG-1 community to date. Fans from all countries, as well as prospective fans, log onto ATSSG1 daily and talk about points in the show, the actors, the plot lines, mistakes, and more.
There also are two mailing lists that allow fans to mail out to a group of people their feelings on SG-1 and fans can instantaneously respond. For information on joining these SG-1 mailing lists see #11.
Finally there are the Stargate SG-1 web sites. Currently there are about 30 websites that deal with SG-1, officially and unofficially. There are several sites based out of the US, some out of Canada, and some out of Australia. Therefore if you live in Australia and don't want to get spoilers from a US page you can head over to an Australian page.
As of today we have no real evidence that fans have influence the television series but it is thought that we do have some pull. As stated before, both the creators of Stargate SG-1 keep a watchful eye on the online community. Most likely the creators at least take into consideration some of the complaints/ideas that fans do have on the show but there is no real evidence of this as of yet.
