As I watched the fan convention scenes of the movie "Galaxy Quest",
this very simple but extremely versatile xover idea popped in my head. Choose
one or more of your favorite television characters who live in the present
day. (I would have said the 20th century but I didn't want to get into the
"millenium's end" debate.) Make this person (or persons) a closet
Questarian (GQ fan) attending the final con in the movie incognito. Have them
witness the movie's "grand finale" and react to this astonishing
event in their own unique way(s). Voila, instant xover! For maximum humor,
have two or more characters from the same TV show go to the con separately and
secretly, only to encounter each other in full costume on the way to
the con's masquerade contest to do a skit.
Here are a few more GQ xover ideas targeted to the fanfic mailing lists I'm
subscribed to:
Seven Days: The social and political implications of the movie's
very public "grand finale" threaten national security, so Frank
Parker makes a Backstep to have a team ready to put a coverup in place.
Angel: Cordelia has a vision that she interprets as a
conventioneer being attacked be a squid-like demon. When Angel arrives at
the con he discovers that Cordy had it backward; an innocent alien
(Laliari, the girl "Tech Sgt. Chen" brought home) is
attacked by costumed vampire. Since her race believes that all TV programs
are historical documents, she quickly (and accurately) sizes up the
problem, and tries to get her newfound friends to join Angel's fight
against the forces of darkness.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Same as above, replacing Angel with
Buffy and Cordy's vision with an ambiguous prophecy Giles finds.
Charmed: Same as with Angel, with Phoebe's vision replacing
Cordy's, the Halliwell sisters replacing Angel et. al. and a demon or
warlock replacing the vampire.
Relic Hunter: Sydney Fox goes to the con in search of a rare
piece of GQ memorabilia, and finds more than she bargained for.
Roswell: Maria Deluca goes to the con to help her mother sell her
Roswell themed souvenirs in the dealer's room. After recognizing the
"grand finale" was not just a publicity stunt, she tries
to contact the cast to see if they have met any
"Czechoslovakians" out there. Fortunately her mother has some
connections; unfortunately a very familiar FBI agent is also
lurking around.
Now and Again: Heather and Lisa Wiseman win a contest prize of a
free weekend at the national GQ convention in Pasadena (air fare
included), and decide to go in memory of Micheal who was an ardent fan.
Meanwhile, Dr. Morris takes Micheal to the JPL labs there for more tests,
and as a reward for good behaviour Theo allows Micheal to attend the
convention just in time for the "grand finale".
Stargate SG-1: An SGC staffer on leave (possibly but not
necessarily an SG-1 team member) is attending the convention during the
"grand finale" and, realizing from his/her personal experience
that this is not a publicity stunt, calls in the troops to ensure
this is not a Goa'uld trick to bypass the Protected Planets Treaty.
Highlander: The Raven: The show seems almost Immortal, why not
the fans? Nick Wolfe, still reeling from his recent Quickening and what he
perceives as Amanda's betrayal, seeks healing for his psychic wounds in
the convival atmosphere of the GQ convention. Amanda tracks him there, and
arrives just in time for the "grand finale" where they realize
one of the returning "crew" is Immortal. (Perhaps the only thing
that the Omega 13 can't reverse is a Quickening?)
The Crow: Stairway to Heaven: Eric is visiting Sarah when the Red
Alert to the online GQ fan network comes through. Fortunately both of them
are dedicated Questarians and are able to provide critical information to
help Brandon assist "Cmdr. Taggert" in reclaiming the Protector.
Later, they watch in awe a cybercast from a laptop webcam of the movie's
"grand finale". (Note: This last plot may be expanded to
include online fans from other TV series to make a poly-xover.)
