Move down to see An advance copy of GIFT FROM THE HADDONFIELD ROTARY MAKES AN IMPACTThe Bequia Library has been the recipient of a generous grant of $ EC2700 from the Rotary Club of Haddonfield,New Jersey, USA. This gift, in recognition of the importance of the new library to the education of the children on the island has resulted in the addition of more than l50 new books for children from 6 to 12years of age and are the first new books for our younger readers in many years. These books were selected by the Haddonfield Public Library with assistance from The Friends of the Bequia Library. A special effort was made to locate books with Caribbean themes and more than 40 books were bought in this category. The most popular books for young adults are the series The Hardy Boys and 13 PineStreet. All the books are now on the shelves and in active circulation. The Bequia Library is most grateful to the Haddonfield Rotary.SATURDAYS AT THE LIBRARYThe Friends of the Bequia Library continues their popular Saturday Morning Story Hours. For over ayear now, children from around the island meet at the library each Saturday morning at 10:00AM tolisten to exciting stories read to them by Myrtle James and other volunteers from the local and expatriate community. These Story Hours were instituted to encourage the children to come to the library, to feel comfortable there, and to develop good reading habits -- they are encouraged to take at least one book home with them each week. The new books contributed by the Haddonfield Rotary have now given the children some new and interesting books to read.THANKS TO OUR MANY FRIENDSWe all need friends and the Bequia Library is very grateful to all the people on Bequia (including many foreigners living on the island) who became members of The Friends of the Bequia Library. Over $ EC 4000 was raised on the island during our first fund drive last year and the money was used for the purchase of CXC books for older students on the island. Without the generous support from Friends like you, the library could never be able to reach our goal of meeting the reading needs of our children by expanding the book collection.REGATTA AT THE LIBRARYWe all know that the island really come alive during the annual Bequia Regatta and we at the library are also planning some special events and will be hosting our own Regatta Party! There be special stories read about sailing in the Caribbean, a poster contest, games and LUNCH. We also hope that Athneal Ollivierre, The Last Harpooner, will be able to join us and regal the children about the whaling tradition on the island.all comments by e-mail to Rannie Gregg Chairperson FoBL. return to Russ' St. Vincent and The Grenadines . . . or Russ' Bequia
