ELMA MILLER - composer Co-ordinates: E-mail: elma.miller@freenet.hamilton.on.ca Web: http://www.freenet.hamilton.on.ca/~aa210/Profile.html Education: M.Mus. composition/theory (University of Toronto), 1979 Mus.Bac. composition (University of Toronto), 1977 Studied with: Walter Buczynski, John Beckwith, John Weinzweig, Lothar Klein and Buguslaw Schaffer for composition; Elaine Keillor, piano and organ. Inspiration and lateral thinking from Marshall McLuhan, William Buxton and Geoffrey Payzant. Professional Activity (highlights): 1997 New work (Seven Sisters Rising), for full orchestra, commissioned by the Windsor Symphony Society, to be premiered on January 24, 1996. The title refers to the heliacal rising of the Pleiades in June. New work commissioned by the Swedish group P„rlor f”r Svin (Private funding) to be premiered in New York in May. "An ensemble which feels as much at home in civilised concerts halls as in barbaric basement locales. They simply commission high-quality clas sical works and perform them in jazz and rock clubs to show that serious contemporary music can also be entertaining." (from Nerikes Allehanda, a Stokholm newspaper). New Work commissioned by David Gerry (through the Canada Council) to be premiered in Toronto, also in May. 1996 La nuit s'ouvre (solo clarinet), commissioned by Stephen Pierre (through the Canada Council) will be premiered at the Elora Festival of Canadian music in October. On November 9th, Symphony Hamilton conducted by James McKay performed Circumstantial Evidence with E. Miller providing a narration as part of Hamilton's Sesquicentennial celebration. 1995 Voices in Stone (solo piano), commissioned by Elaine Keillor was premiered in Toronto during "Sound Thinking" Philosophy/Music Symposium at the Edward Johnson Building, U of Toronto. This composition was inspired by the ancient Persian cuneiform scri pt of King Daryavush I. It is a strong and dramatic work. Miller's Circumstantial Evidence appeared again on Windsor Symphony's concert series on Canadian music, conducted by Susan Haig. 1994-95 Can a Smart Cat Scare Nice Mice? (soprano, violin, cello, piano), was written for CMC's 35th Anniversary Concert and taped by the CBC for broadcast. It is a taut and humorous drama that continues her aesthetic pursuits in framing small sections of time into microcosms of activity and angst. Windsor Symphony performs several movements from Circumstantial Evidence. 1993 Miller had been typesetting music by computer for over seven years. She was asked by Dr. E. Keillor to implement the computer typesetting, layout and design of both music and text for her book: John Weinzweig, The Radical Romantic of Canada (1994). I t now has been published by Scarecrow Press as part of their series of North America's pioneer composers. 1991 Through a Narrow Window (piano solo), was performed at the 40th Anniversary celebration of the Canadian League of Composers in Winnipeg. In the fall, during Toronto's Big Squeeze Accordion Festival, Tiina Kiik premiered Schroedinger's Cat commissione d by her through the Ontario Arts Council. In August 1993, Schroedinger's Cat was performed by Kiik at the Podewil music festival in Berlin and will appear on an upcoming CD. 1990 In March, Syneidesis IX (violin, piano), at the Georg Ots Music Festival in Tallinn, Estonia, caused musicologist/critic Avo Hirvesoo to write in Kodumaa [a popular Estonian weekly] that "Miller's work Syneidesis IX, was the artistic highlight of the concert. We look forward to hearing the entire Syneidesis offerings from her compositional output." 1989 ...to light one candle... (accordion, strings) commissioned by Lyria Borealis, through the Laidlaw Foundation, was inspired by the exciting political revolution in her parents' native Estonia and the epic struggle to regain national independence. 1989 udok asem ets, for three vocalists, is a small drama; an intense episode in a smoky bar. The text is based on 328 Estonian words anagrammatically derived from the letters of Udo Kasemets. This piece was toured in South America and India in 1989 and h as become a perennial favourite in Montreal by Quebequois reviewers as "Estonian Rap." Richard Todd of the Ottawa Citizen called it "abstract psycho-drama, and very effective." Miller's compositional aesthetic continues to explore this area of the psyche. 1987-92 Founded Music Here and Now (a series devoted to 20th century chamber music concerts with an emphasis on Canadian composers) and became its Artistic Director. Though she had been putting on concerts since 1984, this series became a highlight in Ham ilton's music scene, attracting composers and performers from the area, Quebec and the US. 1988 Bryce Kanbara, the curator of the Burlington Cultural Centre, invited her to become the curator of Pierced Ear - a festival of live and taped music by Canadian composers at the Burlington Cultural Centre. The audience, in comfortable soft chairs with low lighting and pillars of goldfish in aquaria, sat and relaxed or moved through the exhibit of hugely enlarged musical scores hanging throughout the gallery whilst the music was being played on tape. A time chart indicated what could be heard at any gi ven time for an entire month. This was a major attraction in Burlington and Hamilton-Wentworth region. 1985-86 McClure commissioned by Theatre Aquarius of Hamilton. A one-man show with music throughout, based on the Rev. Robert McClure and his 30 years in China, it toured Canada and then was broadcast on TV. Written by Munroe Scott, this work traces McClur e's life in China prior to his becoming the moderator of the United Church of Canada. Scored for one cello, it was praised by many critics as "effective and unique." 1986 Nƒka, commissioned by Two plus One (flute, cello and guitar) from Yellowknife, NWT, (Canada Council commission), was the first piece from the south to tour the trap lines in multiple performances throughout the native communities of the NWT. The dram a was enhanced by elders reciting the story of the Northern Lights in the original language with dramatic lighting to intensifiy the impact of the nocturnal display. 1983 Circumstantial Evidence, commissioned by the Saskatoon Symphony through the Canada Council is based on the titles of mystery stories. This piece was toured throughout the prairies and is enjoying a comeback with repeat performances in orchestras in S outhern Ontario in 1994-96. 1981 Miller was invited to attend England's Society for the Promotion of New Music Summer session held at York University, UK. Polish composer Boguslaw Schaffer held Master classes in composition and Audience Piece was realised and performed at the summer course. It was a spoof of composers' expectations of an audience; how quickly they could respond to the appropriate musical endings in music of different eras and their attitude and posture during the performance. The performers consisted of a group of c omposers instructed by Miller, who also instructed the audience on their proper response to the music presented. MEMBERSHIPS AND ARTICLES: Canadian Music Centre (CMC), Association of Canadian Women Composers (ACWC), Canadian League of Composers (CLC), SOCAN, and a founding member of the World Forum for Acoustic Ecology (WFAE).
