Solutions given for the error messages below are the
most common. They may not be the only solution. Contact the helpdesk
if you receive the same error message repeatedly.
Connection Errors

629
The port was disconnected by the remote
machine
Your username and/or password were entered incorrectly. Make sure
you enter both in lowercase. Remember, your username is your HWCN
userid (i.e.. aa123). If unsuccessful after several attempts your
password may be corrupted. Call our helpdesk to have your password
reset.
Error 630
The port was disconnected due to hardware
failure.
The computer is not receiving a response from the modem. Check that
the modem is plugged in, and if necessary, turn the modem off, and
then turn it back on, or restart your computer.
Error 633
The port is already in use
Make sure that you are not using another program that requires the
modem, such as a fax software or hyperterminal. If not, try rebooting
your computer to reset your modem.
Error 645
Internal authentication error
This error can occur if the Require encrypted password option
is enabled on the Server Types tab in the Connection properties.
Go to Dial Up Networking. Right click on your HWCN icon in
the and select Properties. Click on the Server Types
tab and make sure there is not a check mark beside Require
encrypted password. Click on OK to make sure any changes
take effect.
Another possible reason for the error is that the user name or
password have been entered incorrectly.

The line is busy
Make sure you are dialing the right number and try again.

The Computer You Are Dialing Is Not
Answering This error can occur if you are dialing the wrong number, there
is a problem with the CommunityNet server or your modem is unable
to handshake with remote modem before allotted time

There is no dial tone
Make sure that your modem is installed correctly according to the
manufacturers instructions. Be sure that all connections to and from
the modem are correct, or that the phone line is not being used by
another person or device such as a fax machine. Other possible reasons
could be a faulty modem or faulty telephone cables. If you have a
call answer service on your phone line, messages may need to be cleared
to establish a dial tone.

The computer you're dialing in to
cannot establish a Dial-Up Networking connection.
Check your password, re-enter it making sure your Caps Lock
is not on.

720
No PPP control protocols configured.
This error can occur if you computer has been incorrectly setup for
access to the Internet. Go to your Dial Up Networking, right
click on your HWCN icon, and select Properties. Click on Server
Types and make sure the Type of Dial Up Server begins with
PPP. If it does not, select one from the drop down list. It should
also have your Operating System listed somewhere after the PPP:. Click
on OK and attempt the connection again.
Error 797
The modem could not be found. This error only occurs with Windows 2000 and XP. This problem
may be corrected by rebooting your computer or updating your modem
drivers.

Dial Up Networking could not negotiate
a compatible set of network protocols... Settings in Dial-Up Networking are incorrect. Go to your Dial
Up Networking, right click on your HWCN icon, and select Properties.
Click on Server Types and make sure the Type of Dial Up
Server begins with PPP. If it does not, select one from the drop
down list. It should also have your Operating System listed somewhere
after the PPP:. Click on OK and attempt the connection again.

Could not detect modem
Try rebooting the computer to reset your modem, or if it is an external
modem, make sure that it is on. Ensure that your modem is installed
correctly and the modem driver is up to date.

Error
Could Not Connect To Remote Server Make sure that you have the correct server name. In Outlook Express,
click Tools and then click Accounts. Click on your HWCN
mail account to highlight it and then click on Properties.
Under the Servers tab, make sure that the Incoming Mail
(POP3) is pop.hwcn.org. Click on OK if changes were made
and then Close.
SMTP
Error
Host not found Make sure that you have the correct server name. In Outlook
Express, click Tools and then click Accounts. Click
on your HWCN mail account to highlight it and then click on Properties.
Under the Servers tab, make sure that the Outgoing Mail
(SMTP) is smtp.hwcn.org. Click on OK if changes were
made and then Close.
Note: If you use another ISP to connect to the Internet, but
also have an HWCN email account, the Outgoing Mail (SMTP)
setting MUST be that of your ISP, NOT the HWCN.
Modem
Hangs Up After Sending/Receiving Email
In Outlook Express go to the menubar,
click Tools and then click Options. In the Options window
click on the Connection tab. Remove the checkmark next to Hang
up after sending and receiving. Click onOK.
The connection
to the server has failed
This error occurs when your HWCN email
account attempts to connect to incorrect servers. This may be directly
related to having Norton Anti-Virus scanning your incoming and/or
your out going mail. Disable this feature in Norton Anti-Virus and
if necessary, return the mail servers to those of the HWCN.

Server Rejected Senders E-mail Address
Make sure that you are connected to the HWCN, otherwise your Outbox
files may be corrupted. From the Start menu, click on Find,
and choose Files or Folders.... In the Named: field,
type outbox.idx. Click the Find Now button. Click the
outbox.idx file so that it is hightlighted. From the File menu,
choose Delete. In the Named: field, type outbox.mbx.
Click the Find Now button. Click the outbox.mbx file so that
it is highlighted . From the File menu, choose Delete.
Close the window and try sending your email again.
Server 'Time
Outs'
Chances are someone is trying to send
you a very large email, probably with an attachment. In Outlook
Express, click on Tools and then Accounts. With your
HWCN email account selected, click on Properties. Under the
Advanced tab, change the Server Timeouts slider to
Long (5 minutes). Click on OK and then Close.
Alternatively, close your email program and log on to Web
Email to retrieve, read, save the attachment if desired, and
then delete the email (The attachment must not be bigger than the
limit set in Web Email). This should remove the offending email
from the HWCN server so that when you open your regular email program
it will not retrieve it.
Mailer Daemon
(Mail Delivery Subsystem)
If an email returns to you after sending
it you may encounter a 'mail daemon' message. Usually these error
messages give the reason why the email was return. The most common
reasons are an incorrect email address or, the inbox of the person
you are trying to send to is full and they cannot accept any more
email.

have permission to access the site.

You don't have permission to access the site or you have incorrectly
entered the information necessary to access it.

You don't have permission to access the site or you have incorrectly
entered the information necessary to access it.
Error 404
File Not Found
You have incorrectly typed the URL wrong, the page you are looking
for no longer exists or you are trying access the Internet without
actually being connected to it.
