Netscape 4 Messenger

The following are instructions on how to manually set up your email account. It is recommended that you print a copy of this page for future reference.

  1. Open Netscape Messenger by clicking on Start, Program Files, Netscape Communicator and then Netscape Messenger. If this is your first time using Netscape Messenger, a Mail and Newsgroups Setup box will appear telling you that it needs to gather information. Click on Next.

  2. In the Your Name field, type in your name as you wish it to appear on outgoing emails. In the E-mail Address field type in your e-mail address. In the Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server field, type in smtp.hwcn.org. Click on Next.

  3. In the next box, type in your User ID as assigned by the CommunityNet in the field called Mail Server User Name. In the Incoming Mail Server field, type in pop.hwcn.org. Make sure your Server Type is set to POP3. Click on Next.

  4. The next box asks for the News (NNTP) Server. Type in news.hwcn.org in this field . Click on Finish. This completes the information Messenger needs to enable your e-mail and your newsgroups. At some point, Messenger may ask your for your password. This is the same password as your dial up account.

  5. Click on Edit from the menu bar at the top of Messenger, and then click on Preferences. Under the heading Mail & Newsgroups there are several catergories to customize your email and news preferences such as stating your organization, spelling checking, remembering your password and inbox layout. If you make any changes to these settings, be sure to click on OK when finished so they take effect.
