Connecting to HWCN using Windows 2000

The following are instructions on how to manually set up your Internet connection using the Internet Connection Wizard. It is recommended that you print a copy of this page for future reference.

  1. Go to Start > Settings and click Network and Dial-up Connections.

  2. Delete any previous HWCN dial-up networking connections, if any, by right clicking on their icons and choose Delete.

  3. Double click on Make New Connection. This will start the Network Connection Wizard. Click Next.

  4. On the Network Connection Type screen select Dial-up to the Internet. Click Next.

  5. The Internet Connection Wizard begins. Select the 3rd choice: I want to set up my Internet connection manually, or I want to connect through a local area network (LAN). Click Next.

  6. Select I connect through a phone line and a modem. Click Next.

  7. Leave the Area code field blank and enter 905-540-8968 in the Telephone number field. Select Canada(1) as the Country code. Remove the checkmark next to Use area code and dialing rules. Click Next.

  8. In the User name field enter your User ID (ie. aa123). Enter your password in the given field. Verify that both entries are in lowercase! Click Next.

  9. Enter HWCN as the name of this connection. Click Next.

  10. The wizard can also set up your email account in Outlook Express. At this point select No. Click Next.

  11. Uncheck the box asking you to connect immediately. Click Finish. You should now see an icon called HWCN in your Network and Dial-up Connections window.

  12. Right click on your HWCN connection icon and select Create shortcut. A dialog window will inform you that you cannot create a shortcut in this folder, and will ask whether you would like it placed on your desktop. Click Yes.

  13. You should now see an icon on your desktop called Shortcut to HWCN. Double click this icon to start your Internet connection.
