"Bicycle Paths in the City of Hamilton
In the past five years, all kinds of people have jumped on the bicycle bandwagon. People from six to sixty, with three speeds, ten speeds and tricycles, are filling the streets. Unfortunately, many municipalities had not anticipated that bicycle use would increase so quickly and, consequently, were not prepared to cope with the growth in traffic volume. The unhappy result, according to Police Department statistics, is a substantial rise in the number of bike accidents.
During the spring of 1973 the Department of Engineering undertook to study the feasibility of setting up bike routes in the City. It found that the only possibility was to make use of the existing street system since Hamilton, unlike some other Canadian cities, does not have a park belt system surrounding it. Using the streets also reduces cost. The study also suggested that bicycle routes should link "activity centres" such as parks, beaches, employment centres, schools and the university. The routes should be varied and interesting, to give the cyclists an enjoyable trip.
The system suggested by the Engineering Department is divided into two sectors - upper, that is the Mountain and Lower, possibly linked by Mount Albion Road. Unfortunately, little progress has been made towards implementing this plan but the City hopes to be able to begin the project soon."
