CAR FREE ART, POETRY, MUSIC and FILM, STAIRCASE CAFE THEATRE
April Severin organizing art show.
Everyone agrees a kids show followed by "Run Lola Run" will be good movie
features.
Agree that we should be "firm" with deadline for submissions and let April
deal with extensions to the artists (suggested we could extend by a week
unless we are flooded with art.)
Staircase would like to be as flexible as possible (info@staircase.org) but
would not like poets to use heavy swearing in their performances if we aim
to make this an all ages, inclusive event. Rob feels we could have a more
casual line-up of performers in case the cafe area is not busy at early
times.
Jarah to help April in any way she can. Wednesday, September 22, CAR FREE DAY street parties
ATC, McMASTER
Lyanne organizing a street party with car painting on campus (see below for

Suggested time - 4:00pm - 7:00pm - Randy to verify time with Pepperjacks and
ask Gord for update
Randy to ask recyclers to bring car for painting and invite artists, clowns,
performers. There is food available at the great eateries in the area.
Encourage people to support them.
Randy to look into a large, air filled, energy sucking jumping balloon for
kids. Does it require a generator?
Pepperjacks is willing to help out by supplying space and electricity and
sound equipment - thinking of an afternoon party, with kids activities
Randy contact grassroots@hwcn.org 905-627-2696
Sunday, September 26 - CAR FREE COOTES -
Mayor's office replied to letter from Randy asking for Cootes Dr. to be car
free for the day. City said they do not make proclamations but have not
opposed idea yet. [UPDATE: city requires 90 day notice, $450 permit and $2
million liability - try next year, with opportunity to work with city on
CFD - randy] University might support the event.
Randycontacted people at RBG and Conservation Authority for support. Waiting

FROM ACT Brainstorm:
Car Free Day - on campus activities on the Wednesday, Sept 22, 2004
present - Gord P, April S, Paul U, Tony H, Randy K, with Rob from Staircase. Minutes - Randy
A week of Car Free events was discussed - in chronological order we decided that:
Tony Hendry will organize and guide a BUS 'N HIKE trip from McMaster University to Spencer Gorge (Tews/Websters Falls) on MONDAY SEPTEMBER 20 - TO DO - We need to firm up meeting place and times. Tony will contact the HSR to see if there are any promotional opportunities, and get an idea of bus times - (maybe check with TUG too, since they've done some of this kind of thing already?) Tony contact: Nocleanair@aol.com
Paul (with help from Tony) will organize a guided BIKE TOUR from McMaster to the Waterfront Trail on TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 21 - TO DO - Paul will contact the Mac Cycle folks about doing free bike tune-ups prior to the ride - Paul will contact local historian Brian Henley about providing some historical guiding along the route - need to fix meeting place and times - ride will be timed to coincide with the 7:30 start of the art/poetry event (below). Paul contact: PAUL.UY@learnlink.mcmaster.ca
April is organizing a CAR FREE ART, POETRY, MUSIC and FILM night for 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, September 21 at the STAIRCASE CAFE THEATRE- Staircase staff Rob and Jen were extremely helpful with planning the show - April will put out a Call for Entry for art works, etc. She will keep Rob in the loop. April contact: aseverin@sympatico.ca
**[please offer suggestions for the Car Free film to be screened at the Staircase! - so far we've had Pee Wee's Big Adventure, The Bicycle Thief, and a few others I can't remember - so let us know what you think]**
Wednesday, September 22, CAR FREE DAY street parties - this is still in the works - idea is to find people in different neighbourhoods to host street parties, street garage sales, road hockey, etc - Randy contacted Cathy Gazzola from the Durand neighbourhood - she took the idea to a meeting - waiting to hear back from her. If anyone on the TLC list is interested in organizing a party on your street, let us know - TO DO - Randy to e-mail Cathy, talk to other neighbourhood associations. Randy contact - grassroots@hwcn.org
Thursday, September 23 - Gord is looking into a "BIKE DRIVE-IN" outdoor movie event, maybe in Gage Park. TO DO - Gord will search for location and enquire about using the space, access to electricity, etc. Randy will call the Art Gallery of Hamilton about possible partnership? Need to decide on movies to be shown, start time, etc. Gord dontact: gp@nas.net
Friday, September 24 - CRITICAL MASS BIKE RIDE, 5:30 pm Hess and George Street (this is the regular last Friday of the month ride) - consider taking the ride to Red Hill? (Paul wondered how we could include Red Hill in the car free activities, maybe this is one way?) TO DO - get word out, put up posters.
Saturday, September 25 - STREET RECLAIMING - Gord is checking in with Ken at Pepperjacks on King WIlliam street about timing of the street party - Pepperjacks is willing to help out by supplying space and electricity and sound equipment - thinking of an afternoon party, with kids activities - TO DO - (help out if you can!) get performers, musicians, buskers, human-powered movement people, drummers, sidewalk chalk, bubbles, sod, Recycle Cycles has agreed to do free tune-ups, contact the stores in the area to sell food outside, and to let them know about the party, advise emergency (fire, ambulance) of the street blockage nearer to the date Randy contact grassroots@hwcn.org 905-627-2696
Sunday, September 26 - CAR FREE COOTES - Ward One councillor Brian McHattie agreed to lead a nature hike in Cootes. TLC discussed possible street closure of Cootes for the day - is it is a street closure are we expected to pay city insurance, etc.? TO DO - Randy will look into it, talk to city, contact at RBG. Randy contact grassroots@hwcn.org 905-627-2696
TLC agreed to pay Gord Pullar $100 to create CAR FREE DAY poster with various events listed, (and maybe room for info on street party locations and times - still waiting to hear about people planning on doing that) TO DO - Randy get a cheque made for Gord (phoned Hanna at OPIRG, she'll write a cheque and leave it on my desk at work)
Randy will coordinate overall (help welcomed) - any updates should be sent to grassroots@hwcn.org
We didn't discuss a follow-up meeting - there are people who want to help who couldn't make this short-notice meeting - how about two weeks - 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 17, at the student Centre at McMaster?
You won't see Paradise if you don't pedal! We discussed some possibilities re cfd
Car free day falls on wednesday, september 22, 2004
Through the OPIRG office Randy has booked a screening room at McMaster (Ewart Angus 1a6) for a bike film night Thursday, September 23 with "We Are Traffic: A film about Critical Mass" and "Return of the Scorcher"
We should approach the Staircase Theatre about another screening of some Car Free type movie (they may have some suggestions - I like Pee Wees Big Adventure -c'mon admit it, so do you) and we might also check in with the Art Gallery of Hamilton which showed Bike themed movies last year in partnership with us for Car Free Day 2003.
Randy is also working on getting volunteers to lead bike trips as well as bus 'n hike trips (inspired by TUG's work) and Gord Pullar has offered to lead a hike and sketch/paint walk - Carl Rothfels from the RBG/Hamilton Naturalists club offered his bountiful services for a nature hike, we might see if Brian McHattie would lead a walk as well. SO we can plan some of these to coincide with car free day/week.
Now the nitty gritty - Jeff and Randy thought that if we could contact some good people in the Neighbourhood associations, like Cathy Gazzola in Durand, Hal Costie in Corktown, and someone in Kirkendale and Westdale, etc. we could see if we could encourage some street party fun in neighbourhoods on the wednesday (sept 22) early evening. No big deal, just pulling out some lawnchairs and hanging out, each party could take on it's own flavour depending on what people bring to it.
Friday September 24 is the regularly scheduled Critical Mass ride, so poster the hell out of the city and get a big ride with lots of Mac students.
For the Saturday, sept. 25 a STREET PARTY DOWNTOWN - live music, SOD! etc. maybe at King William and Hughson like in 2002.
WE NEED SOMEONE TO PUT TOGETHER A NICE INFO PACKAGE TO PROMOTE CAR FREE DAY - the bars/restaurants on King William were into Car Free Day in 2002 and we had no problems and a great time. We can do it again. We would line up some performers, have some drumming, DJ, dancing, face painting, car painting, chalk drawing, hoscotch hopping, bubble blowing, ring around the rosy kind of fun. etc.
We can ask Recycle Cycles, Mac CycleCoOp and others to help do some free bike tune ups.
Ask the HSR to support with free advertising on some of the buses. Bus n Hike - car Free day logo, etc.
Questions - what does Green Venture, ACT, etc. have in mind for car free day - can we work together? (of course we can)
Maybe a snazzy web site, nothing half assed (that let's me off the hook)-
That 'bout wraps it up - have a nice day...
and get in touch if you can help!!!!!
Present - Randy
Waited, went home.
