Bev Bernbaum has been addicted to all things contra since she was first introduced to it at the wonderful Falcon Ridge Folk Festival (Albany, NY) in the summer of 1996. Not long afterwards, she made her debut as a caller: for a group of drunken students in a college pub! Seeing that things went much better than anticipated that night, she decided to keep at at. Since then, she has been in demand as a regular caller in Toronto (where this season she is again president of the Toronto Country Dancers), Hamilton, Buffalo and Owen Sound; she has also made calling appearances in Southington CT and Peterborough, Ontario. Bev's philosophy is to call the dances that she likes to dance herself. She's always on the lookout for interesting figures or formations to mix things up. Her clear voice, calm manner and straightforward teaching style make contradancing a pleasure for both beginning and experienced dancers. Once you've danced to her calling, you'll know why Hamilton Country Dancers is delighted that she is returning for another October weekend.

Musicians

Relative Harmony

Photo of Relative Harmony     Relative Harmony have been playing for dances since the turn of the millennium. A family trio, they are: Rick Avery on keyboards and guitar, daughter Katie on violin, and son Jonathan on violin and percussion. Their music is an energetic and engaging selection of English, North American and Québecois tunes. Their style is influenced by the playing of many of the current New England dance bands, and is sure to keep you on your toes with a strong, steady back-beat and energetic fiddling. So far in 2002 they have performed all over Ontario, including Ottawa, Owen Sound, Toronto and Hamilton, and at a plethora of school, community, camp and wedding dances. This will be their first appearance at the Hamilton October Dance Weekend.
