Supporting your Child

French is not required to help!

As a child's second language skills develop he will constantly transfer the skills learned in one language to the other. Give your child lots of opportunity to read, write and express his thoughts and ideas and you will be encouraging him to develop his skills in both languages.

  • Read to and with your child in English every day
  • Listen to your child read in French. Encourage comprehension by asking questions, but don't ask for a translation.
  • Help your child with Math using the same techniques you normally would in English (eg: adding and subtracting with coins or marbles). For written math problems, teach the child to concentrate on the exact meaning of each word and draw pictures to illustrate the problem and solution.
  • For social studies and science, your child can explain the topic and receive your help in English, even when the subject matter is in French.
  • Provide French reference materials especially a good French/English dictionary. In later years, books of French verbs and conjugations, grammar and spelling, and common French expressions and idioms will be very useful
  • Make French a part of your child's life. Encourage French reading, rent French music and videotapes. Check your library for materials to borrow (see below). Try French computer games and software to stir their interest.
  • Let your child watch extra TV - in French!
  • Take part in events and activities sponsored by CPF.
  • Travel to French destinations in Canada and overseas to bring French alive for your child.

Resources for French Immersion Students

Hamilton Public Library

The main French collection is located on the 4th Floor of the Central Library, 55 York Boulevard. It comprises about 3000 books, over 200 videos, six magazines: Elle, Actualite, Art et Decoration, L'Express, Quebec Sceince, Jeune Afrique and three newspapers: La Press from Montreal, Le Monde from Paris, L'Express from Toronto.

There is a smaller collection of French children's materials on the 1st Floor. The 4th Floor collection is mainly for adults and secondary level students. There is little that could serve elementary students below grade six in this collection. They should first try the children's French collection.

On the 4th Floor there are all kinds of French dictionaries, grammar books, cassettes and texts for French language learning. Most French and French Canadian literature classics are usually available, including novels, poetry and plays. For school projects there are two French encyclopedias and other sets for science, nature and geography - countries of the world.

Other branches of the Hamilton Public Library also have various children's novels, picture books, research materials, videos and cassette tapes. Ask the Branch librarian to show you where the French materials are shelved.
