Continuing in
French Through High School
You and your
child have invested many years sitting at the dining room table
doing homework with your trusty French/English Dictionary by
your side - Why stop now? Only 4 more years and they will be
officially bilingual .
The Provincial
Certificat D'Immersion is a Ministry of Education document which
shows that a student has graduated with 10 Immersion Secondary
School credits, four of which are consecutive years of Français,
(French Language and Literature).
Hamilton presently
has one French Immersion High School within each Board; Westdale
(Public) located in the west end and Cathedral (Catholic) located
in Hamilton downtown. Both schools offer a wide variety of interesting
courses in French. And as more students enroll in high school
French immersion, more courses will become available.

French Immersion
at Cathedral High School
Admission to
this program is dependent upon the student's proficiency in French.
Graduates from the elementary French Immersion Program and graduates
from French Language schools should inquire about the program
in Grade 8. The certificate of French Immersion is awarded by
the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board as an adjunct
to the student transcript. It provides evidence of a student's
degree of involvement in the French Immersion Program at the
secondary level. This certificate is important for students applying
to study at a French or Bilingual post-secondary institute as
well as for students intending to enter the workforce in a French
or Bilingual capacity.

French Immersion
at Westdale High School
The French Immersion
Department at Westdale Secondary School helps students to achieve
the educational goals set forth by the Hamilton-Wentworth District
School Board and the Ontario Ministry of Education and Training,
and, at the same time, to develop an ability in French at a level
that permits them to:
communicate
easily with French-speaking people;
understand and appreciate Canada's Francophone and Anglophone
heritage;
continue their educational development in French or in English;
accept employment that requires French or English, or a combination
of the two languages.
French Immersion students follow a core curriculum, allowing
them to fulfill the basic requirements as outlined in the new
Secondary School Reform documents, while at the same time becoming
fluent in French. Courses in French, Mathematics, Science, Geography,
History, Career Exploration, Citizenship and Physical Education
are taught by subject specialists who are bilingual.
Immersion students
tend to be actively involved in co-curricular activities and
to take on many leadership roles within the school. They benefit
from core classes where both teachers and students have known
each other for many years and have developed a secure base for
help and encouragement.
