Learn to Read
"Reading: For the Fun of it"

My name is Patrice Berrel and I have been an educator for the past twenty-five years.  During that time, I have taught from grades 2 to 12 and been involved in special education.  I have been a classroom teacher, a reading resource teacher and a vice-principal.  I am currently the principal of Whitehorse Elementary School in the Yukon.  Throughout my teaching/administrative career I have paid particular attention to how young children learn to read, and during those years, I have witnessed many approaches to helping children learn to read.
There are many books on the market that deal with the developmental stages of reading; however, these books are geared toward teachers.  Most of the reading programs that exist, then, are classroom based and therefore not specifically applicable to parents at home.  Other questionable programs, costing hundreds of dollars, have guaranteed large numbers of parents that their programs will “teach” children to read.  In looking at these programs as an educator, I recognized the need for a basic, reasonably priced program to help parents help their children to read.  It was with this in mind that I created a program specifically for parents to help their children not only learn to read, but learn to love to read.

Over the years I have had occasion to talk to many parents regarding  how to best help their children learn to read, and learn to read more proficiently.  Through these conversations, and my own teaching experience, I have personally collected hundreds of ideas on how to help my students and my own children learn how to read.
When putting together these ideas for my program, one of my goals was to create an affordable alternative to the many costly programs currently on the market.  "Reading: For the Fun of it" is that alternative.  It is affordable enough for the average parent, but also informative and fun to use.
My program does not require “extra” tapes and videos for it to be effective.  I wanted to ensure that the activities in “Reading:  For the Fun of It” could be done using books and materials that are commonly found in the average household.  The program is filled with numerous “fun” ideas to help children focus on all aspects of the reading process (phonics, grammar and meaning).  The program does include 8 educational games that reinforce various aspects of phonics, grammar and meaning.  At $29.95 + $5.95 s & h, this represents an excellent and affordable choice for the average parent.
