The Cartographic Map Making Atlas on the Internet(by Esri Inc.) allows users to call up maps & satellite images. Useful as a static reference tool only.

The Geographic Resource Analysis System or GRASS is the original public domain raster based GIS, vector GIS, image processing system, graphics production system, data management system, and spacial modeling system. Originally developed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for the UNIX system, this program package is now available for almost all operating systems!
