Geogratis

This is the Government of Canada's online geographical database. Choose a variety of digital of raster based maps for free!

Geodetic Survey of Canada

The Ministry of Natural Resources Canada's Geodetic Survey Database. Offers a variety of suvey resources and information as well as an online calculator for making UTM/LLA conversions. Useful.

Geocorps.

This is the big one. The United States Army Corps of Engineer's Geospacial Database. Digital maps of almost every square inch of the North American Continent and beyond.

Custom Maps Inc.

Produces vector and raster based maps including CAD based applications.

Aerial Archaeology

This site provides information and resources for those requiring air photo and/or satellite images in aid of their regional survey research.

Cartographic Map Machine

The Cartographic Map Making Atlas on the Internet(by Esri Inc.) allows users to call up maps & satellite images. Useful as a static reference tool only.

ResMap Earth Images

Specializing in Satellite Imaging and Analysis for remote sensing (large scale regional archaeological surveys) and spectrum analysis for locating archaeological sites and macro features hidden by topography, vegetation, etc.

Archaeological Prospectors

Archaeological Prospectors is Canadian-based company specializing in non-destructive geophysical techniques to locate and map archaeological features and sites. Also offers general archaeological services.

Sensors & Software Inc.

This Mississauga based company provides sales, rental, and consulting services surrounding Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) to a variety of environmental, engineering, and archaeological applications.

GPR Technology Inc.

PhotoModeler(Commercial)(Demo)

A 3D photo modeling Package. Includes archaeological examples.

Point (public)

Point is a projectile point classification system by Tara Prindle (Uconn). This program utilizes morphological data to classify projectile points from the American Northeast. (Dos/Windows)

NOAA Paleoclimatology Programs (Public)

A range of ecofact analysis software including pollen analysis & tree-ring data (Ms-Dos, Windows, Unix)

Mapping & GIS Data Management

WinKarst 12.3(Shareware)

For study and mapping of caves and karst features. From the Resurgent Software Company. Includes sketches, GeoTiffMapps; 3D Modeling; GPS tracks & Waypoints; Digital Line Graphs (.DLG) files. User may display, print, and export data to other computer applications. Also includes GeoMag software to find magnetic variations anywhere and anywhen in the world.

GRASS (Freeware, Shareware, Demo)

The Geographic Resource Analysis System or GRASS is the original public domain raster based GIS, vector GIS, image processing system, graphics production system, data management system, and spacial modeling system. Originally developed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for the UNIX system, this program package is now available for almost all operating systems! (UNIX; unix composites (Linux, netBSD etc); Windows95/98; WindowsNT).

TNTLite For Archaeology

Freeware from MicroImages Corporation. For UNIX (includes linux & MacOS X versions), Win98, 2000, XP. Can be requested on CD ROM for the cost of shipping and handling. Fully featured GIS, CAD, and COGO subsystems are also included! Import data from GPS receivers can be imported and plotted in their exact positions on scanned USGS maps (raster) or USGS digital maps (vector)

Arch/Info(Commercial)

Arc/Info is ESRI's GIS raster & vector based GIS system including data management, graphic production and image processing, and spacial modeling. Contact the company for cost and site licensing.

Stratification software and database from Proleg Software. Build customized and error free Harris Matrix taking into account all context chronologies

ProLeg StatiGraf 3.6(freeware)

Complete framework for field archaeologists that allows you to record, document, analyse, and interpret archaeological sites. Integrates single place field registration data, photography, bibliography, artifacts inventory, archaeological drawing, and Harris Matrix thus creating a 'digital model' of the excavation.

Past Perfect Museum Software(Demo)

Museum Collection Management Software: Screen for catalogue numbers, archaeology, geology, music collections, and oral histories. Containes a 'virtual exhibit' feature, web design program and other add-on features including multi-media, imaging, scatter/gather, barcode printing, and ezMARC!

Statistics & Spreadsheet Software

Bonn Seriation & Archaeological Statistics Package (BASP) (Freeware)

This outstanding archaeological package of programs is a must for anybody engaged in seriation, stratigraphic analysis, stratigraphic analysis, and spacial analysis! Written by Irwin Scollar, this collection of tools includes seriation, cluster, correspondence analysis, mapping tools for archaeologists. Stratigraphic analysis display in Harris Matrix. Also includes programs for #D display of data, locating rectangular structures in scanned excavation plans containing thousands of postholes, and for the rectification of extremely oblique aerial photographs and their superposition on large scale scanned maps. Surfer (Demo)

For archaeologists who already know the problems with spreadsheets & archaeological data, Surfer is an outstanding alternative to Lotus, Quattro, and Excel. Includes 3D modeling and map generating capabilities in addition to excellent graph generation and spreadsheet tools. (Windows 95/98)
