These links provide researchers, scholars, and non-profit organizations with starting places to begin raising funds for their research, education, conservation, and community based projects. The agencies presented here have been known to provide financial support for archaeological projects in the past. Researchers and Educators should read each prospectus very closely to make sure that his/her project meets the criteria for each particular foundation or agency's mandate. The agencies and foundations presented here are not listed in any order and the Hamilton Chapter does not endorse any of the links provided.

Other links contain indexes and lists of foundations and givers that do not have Internet Web Sites. Please consult each prospectus carefully to make sure that the project proposal matches the criteria and mandates. The lists provided here are annotated. The Hamilton Chapter does not endorse any of the organizations here. Researchers should contact the agency, foundation, or giver for more information.
The Canadian Centre for Philanthropy (CCP)
This is a good starting place for researchers looking for private funds. The Centre produces the annual Canadian Index to Private Foundations which includes a name, address, and contact number for all listed private foundations in Canada. There is a fee for this service/publication.
Northern Research Institute Fellowships
The Northern Research Institute (NRI), at the Yukon College, offers Fellowships, Research Association, and Grants-In-Aid of research to archaeologists and other researchers conducting studies in Canada's arctic, subarctic, and northern boreal forests. Stipends vary in sum and length of tenure. Some fellowships require that the researcher be in residence at the Yukon College.
Arctic Institute Of North America
The Arctic Institute Of North America offers a variety of research services to scholars conducting research in the North. From access to facilities to affiliation, AINA research support includes Fellowships (non-stipend), Grants In Aid Of Research, Scholarships, and Research Association.
The Inuit Heritage Trust offers support to researchers in areas under the administrative authority of the Inuit of Nunavit. It is dedeicated to the preservation, enrichment, and protection of Inuit cultural heritage and identity embodied in Nunvavut's archaeological sites, ethnographic resources, and tradtional place names. Royal Canadian Geographic Society Grants in Aid of Research
The Royal Canadian Geographic Society (RCGS) offers annual grants in aid of geographic research and education across the country. Programs consist of Regular Grants for individuals (up to $3,000) and Group Grants (to $5,000) to non-profit organizations and community groups. Research and Education topics are wide in scope including geology, geography, demographics, heritage, and macrobiology. The RCGS accepts applications three times a year (Jan. 31; Mar.31; Oct.31).
Humanities & Social Sciences Federation of Canada
The Humanities and Social Sciences Federation of Canada supports the supports the Aid to Scholarly Publications Program designed to assit in the publication of previously unpublished works of advanced scholarly research that otherwise would not be published without assistance. Applications are accepted at any time from Canadian citizens or landed immigrants residing in Canada.
Association For Canadian Studies
Several awards are listed, including the Aid to Student Conference Programme to hold a conference which must be organized by students at a Canadian university and the conference must deal with issues related to the study of Canada and the Graduate Student Research Travel Scholarship award to undertake research or field work related to their thesis or dissertation at a Canadian university, institution, or organization other than their own for three weeks or more. Lists awards for publishing and dissertations amongst others. Contact the association for citizenship and residency requirements.
The American Council of Learned Societies
The American Council of Learned Societies directs funding from over 60 foundations dedicated to supporting research and education in the United States and the Commonwealth. Funding requirements vary with the type of grant being applied for. The ACLS sponsors research and education projects in the Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences but is primarily directed at academics and professionals.
National Geographic Society Research Grants
The National Geographic Society awards grants for scientific field research and exploration through its Committee For Research & Exploration. All proposed projects must have both a geographic dimension and relevance to other scientific fields and be of broad scientific interest. Applications are limited to the following areas: Anthropology, Archaeology, Astronomy, Biology, Botany, Geography, Geology, Oceanography, Paleontology, and Zoology.
The American Philosophical Society
The American Philosophical Society (APS) funds grants, fellowships, and internships in research and education for the Humanities, Social Sciences, Arts, and the Public Discourse of Science. Many grants are open to Canadians through the International Scholars Program. Recipients must take up their award at a museum or institute in the United States. Some funds are not only open to academics, but also to professionals, students, and avocationals.
The American Antiquarian Society lists information for the Mellon Post-Dissertation Fellowship competition, Visiting Academic Research Fellowships(numerous awrds are listed on this page and there is no citizenship requirements for any listed exept the NEH Award which is only open to those with three years residency in the States). Most awards are for historical research and other projects in the Humanities.
Carnegie Corporation of New York
Under Carnegie's will, grants must benefit the people of the Unites States, although up to 7.4 percent of the funds may be used to the benefit the people of some countries that are or have been members of the British Commonwealth. Since they give out over $50,000,000US every year, that means almost $4,000,000US is allocated to other countries. Foundation for the Advancement of Mesoamerican Studies Grants
The Foundation supports scholarly works which advance the understanding of ancient Mesoamerican cultures and supports projects in the disciplines of archaeology, art history, etc. The Foundation encourages interdisiplinary projects, especially those which combine disciplines in novel and potentially productive ways. The Foundation supports the following;
General Grants:$500.00US seed money is provided to most qualified scholars regardless of degree level although FAMSI favopurs degree candidates, recent graduates and professionals whose projects have not had extensive financial support. Citizenship is unrestricted. Deadline for General Grants is September 30, 2001. Contact the Director for more information;
Special Project Grants: These are designed to aid extensive or expensive projects. The Foundation invites projects involving interdisciplinarity. Applications for Special Project Grants are accepted at any time.
Samuel H. Kress/J. Paul Getty Fellowship
The Kress-Getty Resident Fellowship in the History of Art and Archaeology is open to American, Canadian, and International citizens. Recipients must take up their awards at the Center For Advanced Study of Visual Arts in Washington DC. Fellowships carry a personal stipend of $18,000 US for a one year appointment though some fellowships have shorter tenures. An accountable supplement (up to $8,000) is also available for research related travel, conference, and publication expenses. Recipients should expect to give public lectures while in residence at the Center.
This foundation specializes in Michigan/Ontario, Canada/US border projects. It has also been known to finance archaeological projects in the past. The foundation offers primarily grants.
The Smithsonian Institute Fellowships & Internships
The Smithsonian Institute and it's allied museums offer resident Fellowships and Internships to Canadian and International scholars. Recipients must be in residence at the Smithsonian for a specified period of time as part of their obligation for the award. Some awards are open to any citizen (not just academics) who has shown outstanding contributions to their respective discipline.
The Wenner-Gren Foundation for Anthropological Research is a private foundation that supports research in all branches of anthropology. The foundations's mission is to advance significant and innovative research about humanity's cultural and biological origins, development, and variation, and to foster the creation of an international community of research scholars in anthropology.
Fulbright Fellowships for Canadians
The Canada-US Fulbright Program aims to enhance research and teaching opportunities for Canadian and American Students engaged in the study of Canada, the United States, and the relationship between these two countries. Applications are accepted from scholars, students, and professionals in the arts, the humanities, social sciences, policy dimensions of the sciences, and professional fields such as law, business administration, and journalism.
Available to academics, museums, and independant scholars, and to support disertation research. Stipends of $1500.00 per month are available for up to 6 months.
Sigma XI: The Scientific Research Society
The Scientific Research Society (Sigma XI) offers Grants-In-Aid of Research in all areas of scientific inquiry. Applicants may download an application or use the Interactive Online Application procedure.
The Archaeological Institute of America (AIA)
The Archaeological Institute of America is one of the largest organizations in the world. It offers a variety of Travel Grants (for basic expenses), Fellowships, and Internships to students, scholars, and professionals. Some of these funds are available to Canadian and International scholars and citizens. Some funds require a specified residence at an American Institute in the Mediterranean. Researchers should make sure their project requirements fit with the mandates of the Institute.
The World Monuments Fund is a private, nonprofit organization, founded in 1965 by individuals concerned about the accelerated destruction of important artistic & architectural treasures throughout the world.
Earthwatch: Center For Field Research
The Center For Field Research at the Earthwatch Institute accepts applications for research grants throughout the year. Grant size ranges from $7,000.00 US to $130,000.00 US for field research relating to ecology, conservation, archaeology, geology, biology, and zoology. Applicants may be faculty, graduate or undergraduate students, and professionals. Non-Professionals (ie. avocational archaeologists) showing exceptional contributions to their field are also encouraged to apply.
Archaeoexpeditions is a private corporation that links "tourist volunteers" with archaeological projects in the United States, Canada, Europe, and the Mediterranean. Archaeologists must provide information and logistics to volunteers while Archaeoexpeditions markets the project to individuals seeking "heritage or adventure tourism". An alternative way of funding field research.
