FALSE ALARM ON BLASTING

City contractors announced the beginning of escarpment blasting today. They issued warnings this morning to the two individuals occupying trees on the escarpment face and told them to leave the area because the blasting would start in twenty minutes. They also issued three warning blasts with their alarm system. But the tree sitters did not abandon their perches and no blasting took place.

See earlier report below from CATCH.

Blasting of Escarpment Underway
June 24, 2004 BY CATCH - Citizens at City Hall

CATCH has been informed that city contractors have begun blasting operations this morning on the Niagara Escarpment. The blasting for the Red Hill Creek Expressway has apparently been started despite the presence of two tree-sitters near the site.

The timing of the blasting just before the federal election recalls the tactics used last fall when tree cutting for the controversial expressway was initiated a few days prior to the municipal elections. The Globe and Mail has suggested that the NDP might win all four Hamilton federal seats. That would mean defeat for three sitting Liberal members including two cabinet ministers.

Minister of Transport Tony Valeri and Minister of National Revenue Stan Keyes are both strong advocates of the expressway project, and are being openly supported by Mayor DiIanni.
