WE NEED YOUR VALLEY TESTIMONY

Very soon a large hole will be blasted into the Niagara Escarpment for something now being described as "not just a road".

The Red Hill Valley Expressway is not just a road. That's right. It's a monumental mistake. One of this city's - nay the country's - premium green spaces is being sacrificed on the altar of "economic growth". It's not the first such sacrifice and probably won't be the last. But it's among the most egregious.

We have tried everything to the very limits of the law to stop this madness. As this is written, it appears that madness may win out.

But we must not allow the valley as we know it - knew it - to disappear without trying to preserve our memories of it.

That's why the Archival Project on the valley was launched some time ago. Its first manifestation was a wonderful exhibit of photography and other artworks at Bryce Kanbara's You Me Gallery in March.

We have now entered the next phase of the Archival Project. Its goal is to gather as much evidence of the Valley - as it was, what has happened to it since the construction began, and what might happen to it in the future.

Help us create a permanent record of the valley
in the collection of the Hamilton Public Library

We need your testimony.

In whatever way you choose, we need evidence of your engagement with the valley - from very active in a lot of cases to perhaps fleeting in others.

But whatever it was and is, we need it.

Be it photographs, art (yours or your kids'), poems, essays, musical compositions, video, film, recordings - we want it.

We want it because we want to preserve it. That's very important. Future generations need a way to know what the valley looked like, felt like - what its place was in our lives - before the concrete was poured.

We have arranged with the Hamilton Public Library to preserve this material so that it can be made available to all Hamiltonians now, and in the future.

Submissions can be made by email to redhill@hwcn.org or by mail to Friends of Red Hill Valley, Box 61536, Hamilton, Ontario L8T 5A1.
