TREE SITTERS RE-SUPPLIED
by CATCH (Citizens at City Hall)
About 75 people marched into the Red Hill Valley on Saturday afternoon and succeeded in getting food, water and other supplies to two people occuping trees on the escarpment. The group's numbers overwhelmed a half dozen security guards intent on keeping the tree sitters isolated. After a brief attempt to intercept supply crates being lifted into the trees, the security guards withdrew. One person was arrested.
The tree sitters are located just east of the area where city contractors are scheduled to begin blasting an 80-metre wide hole in the face of the escarpment to accommodate the Red Hill Creek Expressway. It is not clear if the protestors have delayed the blasting schedule. They have now been in place for two weeks, although one of the three who originally began the protest on May 31 voluntarily came down last week. They have been largely cut off from contact with their supporters for most of this period, and this is apparently the first time they have been re-supplied.
Their supporters arrived on buses and marched up a short section of Mt. Albion Road before entering the forested area where the tree sitters are located. Police were present when the group arrived but did not interfere with their march. More information on the treesit, including daily updates, can be found at http://treesit.revolutionweb.org/.
