FRIENDS OF RED HILL INDUCTED INTO LAKE ONTARIO HALL OF FAME

Friends of Red Hill Valley, Environment Hamilton honoured for their efforts to protect Red Hill Creek

Lake Ontario Waterkeeper celebrated its 2-year anniversary on December 10, 2003, with the launch of the Lake Ontario Hall of Fame.

Toronto Mayor David Miller helped unveil the Hall of Fame Wednesday evening at Bambu by the Lake. The Hall of Fame honours environmentalists who have shown leadership in communities around the lake.

Among the Hall of Fame’s inaugural inductees are Community AIR – honoured for their efforts to stop the construction of a bridge to the Toronto City Centre Airport – and Friends of the Red Hill Valley and Environment Hamilton – honoured for their ongoing efforts to protect the Red Hill Creek from being paved to make way for an expressway.

“The Hall of Fame honours individuals and communities who have shown commitment to making their neighbourhoods better places to live,” says Waterkeeper President Mark Mattson.

“Mayor Miller’s dedication to restoring our waterfront resonates with communities around Lake Ontario. We are honoured by his support,” Mattson says.

The ceremony took place at Lake Ontario Waterkeeper's holiday bash on Wednesday, December 10, 2003 at Bambu by the Lake.

Groups honoured:

  • Janet and Doug Fletcher (Kingston, Belle Park landfill private prosecution),
  • Port Hope Nuclear Environmental Watchdogs & the Community Health Concerns Committee (radioactive waste legacy),
  • Oshawa Marina Users Committee (Oshawa landfill and Harbour Commission battle),
  • Community AIR (fixed link),
  • High Park Neighbourhood Working Group (Wendigo Creek contamination),
  • and Friends of the Red Hill Valley & Environment Hamilton (Red Hill Creek Expressway).

Lake Ontario Waterkeeper, a local chapter of Robert F. Kennedy Jr’s Waterkeeper Alliance, is an environmental justice organization that fights for clean water and strong communities across Lake Ontario.
