Excellent Book on Red Hill Valley

Friends of Red Hill is selling a stunning new book called "From Mountain to Lake: The Red Hill Creek Valley".

Edited by Dr Walter Peace of McMaster University, the 245-page large format hardcover looks like a coffee table book, but is also loaded with information about the valley. At the reduced price of $20.00, it's definitely a bargain and a wonderful gift idea..

Friends receives $10 for each copy we sell. It is available by contacting Friends of Red Hill

Seven authors contributed their expertise to this work. Brian Laing focuses on the geological history and features of the valley, while Sean Gouglas reviews the archeological record and John Nugent and Karen Stewart-Debreau tell the pioneer history.

Jim Wilson recounts the 10,000 years of native occupation. The vegetation, wildlife and natural features of the valley in both the past and the present are described by Bruce Duncan.

Walter Peace provides a historical introduction, and then devotes over 30 pages to the period from 1950 to the present when the expressway issue has been predominant. It is a factual, well-told story which exposes many of the political intrigues.

ON THE EDGE
Artistic Visions of a Shrinking Landscape

Edited by Catherine Gibbon

Foreward by Doug Larson

available from Friends of Red Hill for $15

Friends of Red Hill is now selling copies of On the Edge: Artistic Visions of a Shrinking Landscape, a stunning collection of local art and international environmental writing edited by Catharine Gibbon. The book was produced as part of the On the Edge Art/Environment Project in the early 1990s, which focused attention on Red Hill Valley, the Dundas Valley and the Beverly Swamp. Artists' camps took place in each area, followed by exhibitions of the works produced.

Many of you will be familiar with the poster for the 1993 Red Hill exhibition which features Robert Ross' striking landscape. The 112-page large-format hardcover presents this and other art from the camps along with a wide selection of environmental prose and poetry. It was originally published in 1995 at a retail price of $30. Friends of Red Hill has been able to obtain discounted copies and is offering the book at a special price of $15.

It joins From Mountain to Lake: The Red Hill Creek Valley [edited by Walter Peace] as a fundraiser for Friends and another striking tribute to the beauty of the Red Hill Valley and the importance of preserving it for future generations.
