Would your group enjoy a guided nature walk in one of Hamilton's largest greenspaces?

Members of our group have led over 200 walks in the King's Forest - Red Hill Valley area of east Hamilton. We think it's a very special place and we are eager to introduce others to its beauty. If you bring the group (or arrange for it to gather at one of the park entrances), we will provide a knowledgeable leader for a one to two hour walk. There is no charge. Our aim is to let people know about this lovely greenspace, in hopes that you will agree with us that it should be protected and enhanced.

Some of the possible walks we can provide include:
  • a spring or summer or fall wildflower walk. Many Hamilton residents have never been to Red Hill Valley, and may have only a vague idea of where it is and the beauty it has to offer.

  • a bird-watching walk

  • an introduction to the trees of the valley, including the Carolinian species

  • a tour of the three waterfalls along the escarpment

  • the science of stream flows and water movements in an urban creek

  • an introduction to the primitive skills used by our ancestors to survive in the forest

  • an exploration of the fish and other aquatic residents of Red Hill Creek

  • a general nature walk with elements of most of the above (a good first choice)

There is an excellent new (1996) trail system, two metres wide, from Mud Street on top of the escarpment, all the way to Confederation Park. It is suitable for strollers, and some sections are fully accessible even for wheelchairs. Best of all, it's right in the city, and you can even get there by the HSR. Tell us what you'd like to see, and we'll do our best to give your group an interesting and pleasant outdoor event.

Our group is called Friends of Red Hill Valley and we have over 850 members. We hold annual walks on New Year's Day and Good Friday, as well as a summer Firefly Festival and other events. Many Hamilton residents have never been to Red Hill Valley, and may have only a vague idea of what this east Hamilton natural area has to offer. Our free walks program is intended to change that.

You can learn more about our group and the Red Hill Valley by viewing our web site. We can also send you a full-colour brochure on the valley and its trails. To arrange a guided walk or for more information, please call us at (905) 381-0329 or send us an email.
