Membership
in Canadian Automobile Association Buys More than Free Maps
In
1979, the Save the Valley group held its first public
forum. Hundreds of residents gathered to voice their opposition
to the proposed freeway through the Red Hill Valley. The
president of the Hamilton Automobile Club, E.R. Prack, was
there as well, boldly proclaiming that motorists had every
right to drive where they want, when they want, including
up and down the Red Hill Valley.
Your
Membership Dollars Promote CAA Political Lobbying Efforts
Since
that time the CAA has campaigned relentlessly for the proposed
expressway, against two-way streets, and against pedestrian
zones. A 1996 editoria1 in the HAC Journal repeated
the cry that "motorists have the right to drive
where they want, when they want." The CAA policy
on Canada's national parks is that they "should
not be unreasonably preserved as unused areas of relative
wilderness." The CAA representative on the Red
Hill Creek Community Stakeholders Committee has been unabashedly
pro-road. The local CAA has not responded to requests to
provide background studies that led them to take this position
on behalf of their members.
Do
you support the CAA's pro-automobile, "pave-the-planet"
policies?
Do
you want a group demanding an expressway in the Red Hill
Valley on your behalf?
Friends
of Red Hill Valley asks its members to let CAA know
that they do not agree with CAA's policies. As your CAA
membership expires, send a note that you are not renewing
due to CAA's policy on the Red Hill Expressway.
But
what if my car breaks down?
There
are many alternatives to the CAA when it comes to emergency
road service such as the Canadian Tire's Auto Club. Note
that Canadian Tire offers service in the U.S., free maps,
and provides service to any person driving the car (CAA
does not.) The enclosed literature is provided as information
only; Friends of Red Hill Valley does not endorse
Canadian Tire's Auto Club nor does that company necessarily
support the actions and policies of Friends of Red Hill
Valley.
