Reality Check

Councillor Larry DiIanni has told us that the City will plant four trees (seedlings) for each one it cuts down in Red Hill Valley.

Reality Check: In the 2003 budget we find that the city:
  • currently cuts down 1250 more trees than they plant every year (p.819)
  • now can't afford to plant ANY new street trees (p. 819)
  • also can't afford to plant any new trees in parks (p.113 in capital budget)
  • can't even afford to remove dead trees from the Barton Street median (much less replace them) (p.838)
  • is eliminating funding for its urban forest management planning (p.818)
  • has no money to enforce the tree-cutting bylaw (p.834)
