High
School Conference: "On the Edge - Exploring
Local Environmental Issues"
On
February 20, 2003 Assumption Secondary School hosted
a conference dealing with local environmental issues.
A total of 24 high schools from Hamilton and Halton
participated in the event. There were approximately
225 students and teachers in attendance. The goal
was to showcase some of our community members who
are working very hard to preserve a healthy and
natural environment for generations to come. The
day kicked off with a keynote address from Dr. Alan
Morgan from the University of Waterloo. Through
the use of many projected images, he was able to
describe some of the serious global challenges that
face humanity.
The students then attended various workshops for
the rest of the day. The workshop leaders included:
-
Elizabeth
Kilvert, Environment Canada;
-
Dr.
Lynda Lukasik, Executive Director, Environment Hamilton;
-
Dr.
David Pengelly, McMaster University;
-
Randy
Kay, Volunteer Coordinator, McMaster OPIRG;
-
Jason
Thorne, Executive Director, Coalition on the Niagara
Escarpment;
-
Don
McLean, Chairperson, Friends of Red Hill Valley;
-
Christine
Brown + Patti Risk, Hamilton Coalition on Pesticide
Issues;
-
Scott
McNie, Coordinator, The Red Hill Schoolhouse;
-
Renee
Sandelowsky, Oakvillegreen; and
-
Dr.
Jim Quinn + Chris Somers, McMaster University.
The day turned out to be a huge success. We
hope that students are inspired to become
more active in their own communities now that
they know such people and organizations exist.
"In the end, we will conserve only what
we love, we will love only what we understand,
we will understand only what we are taught."
