Opposes Expressway
Provincial
NDP leader Howard Hampton was interviewed by the Hamilton
Spectator on May 9. The newspaper asked:What is the NDP's
position on the Red Hill Creek Expressway?
Hampton:
Same as it's always been (the NDP pulled $100 million in
funding from the project in 1990 because of environmental
concerns. The Tories put back the funding in 1995)... We've
now had eight years of Conservative government and it hasn't
happened. I think it hasn't happened because even the Conservatives
know that there are a whole bunch of things that can mitigate
against it.
Spectator:
Such as?
Hampton:
One, for those folks who think this is the magic answer
for Hamilton's economic development, there is no evidence
to support that. That this will somehow make a big difference
in terms of transportation for both Hamilton and the...
Golden Horseshoe there's no evidence to support that.
That this will somehow lessen gridlock there's no
evidence to support that. This will be a very expensive
undertaking and, given all the downloading that's happened,
I doubt that Hamilton has the wherewithal to do it itself.
