Environmentalist
of the Year
Scott
McNie, founder of Friends of Red Hill and leader of the
Red Hill Schoolhouse, received the Dr. Victor Cecilioni
Environmentalist of the Year Award on June 4 at the annual
environmental awards dinner. Scott was recognized for his
long term efforts dedicated to educating and raising the
awareness of citizens of all ages regarding the importance
of the Red Hill Valley and its preservation for future generations.
Lifetime Achievement Awards were given to Jim McDonald and
Anne Redish, while Awards of Merit went to Tina DiClemente
and Franca Ianni, Beth Stormont and Sandi Root, and to Larry
Kelly of Kelly Auto Body.
Scott
and the Red Hill Schoolhouse are continuing to hold rallies,
slide shows and valley walks. At a recent rally outside
the Spectator, Scott gave notice to City Council that the
fight against the expressway will not be stopped by the
initation of construction and will continue at least until
the road is opened to traffic.
"It's possible they may be able to begin construction,
but citizens have to understand that's not the end of the
world. We can still turn it around in the next three years,
before the next civic election," he declared. "The
important thing is that we do not have traffic moving in
the valley. Even if they cut half the trees before we stop
it, while that would be a terrible waste, we would still
have half a valley that hasn't been destroyed. We still
wouldn't have the harmful health effects of smog coming
from traffic moving through the valley.
