Block Expressway Work
Members
of the Iroquois Confederacy took action in late April to
stop archeological work and all other digging in Red Hill
Valley. They ordered City archeologists to pack up and leave.
The First Nations peoples have also posted the valley with
no trespassing signs. They have made clear that these are
not directed at people going for a walk in the valley, but
that they will lay charges against anyone doing any digging
in the valley.
The
City has now begun to hold meetings with the Confederacy
and representives of the Six Nations band council. No further
archeological work has been undertaken. The expressway schedule
released by the City in March indicates that a full year
of archeological work is required before construction of
the expressway can begin.
