Witness Valley Clear-cuts First Hand

While we continue in our fight to stop the City of Hamilton from making more environmental mistakes, efforts are underway in the north end of the valley to tackle a buried legacy of environmental disasters. The remediation of the Rennie, Brampton, and old Nash landfills is now well underway.

Unfortunately, the remediation plan that has been adopted requires that the trees along both sides of Red Hill Creek, from the CN Rail Line to the bridge at Brampton Street, and the trees north of the bridge and on the east side, be completely cleared. The landscape there is now incredibly desolate!

While one can justify clearing trees in order to rectify the serious contamination problems being caused by these old landfill sites, the same cannot be said for the clearing of 40,000 trees for the sole purpose of accommodating an expressway! The present appearance of the north valley certainly gives a horrible preview of the fate of the remainder of the valley if our municipal government continues to push for its expressway in the valley. Clearly, it would be worthwhile to have the mayor and council of the city of Hamilton visit the Rennie/Brampton/Nash area right now to get a firsthand preview of the nature of the destruction that a valley roadway will impose. It's not a pretty picture.

Clear Cuts

Anyone interested in viewing the cleared area is advised not to attempt to enter the fenced in remediation area as it is unsafe to do so. You can see some of the cleared area from the north end of Nash Road. You can also view the clearcuts from the top of the closed Brampton Landfill. Photographs of the cleared areas are posted above.
