We
need Your Help
In
the last issue of the newsletter, we wrote about the absurdity
of the City's claims that it wants to "fix" Red
Hill Creek. In the past few weeks, we've seen a lot more
evidence that the municipal government continues to be the
major source of problems in the creek.
On
one hand, the salmon once again faced the city's concrete
channelization under Queenston Road, and many died as a
result (see Fish Death Trap).
On
the other hand, Friends' activists have found and
reported over twenty illegal "spills" to the creek
since September 1. All of these spills came out of City
storm sewer pipes (see Tales
and Tips from an Avid Red Hill "Sewer Watcher").
Friends is committed to protecting Red Hill Valley,
not just from expressways but also from all the other abuses
being heaped on this parkland. We need your assistance.
- Our
sewer pipe monitoring program is relatively recent,
but it is forcing the City and the Ministry of the Environment
to finally take action against illegal activities that
have been ignored for years. We need a few more individuals
willing to help us watch the pipes for more spills.
We will provide detailed training. Call Lynda at (905)
560-1177.
- For
the past year, members of Friends have conducted
WEEKLY litter cleanups. Our core cleanup crew
is small but extremely committed. They deserve your
support. You don't have to come out every week, but
every little bit helps. Most of the work is done on
the weekends. Please call Vicky at (905) 578-7254.
- The
Queenston Channel has been blocking fish migration
since 1991. It also eliminates over 200 metres of aquatic
habitat. Even government officials admit it is indefensible.
We need a concerted campaign to get rid of it. Please
call Don at (905) 664-8796 if you would be willing to
be part of a small group to accomplish this.
