Asks City to Cooperate on Red Hill Trail Improvements
Friends
of Red Hill has written to recently elected Mayor Robert
Wade proposing a cooperative program to improve the Valley
and its trail system. In his "People's Charter"
election platform, Mr. Wade focused attention on the need
to improve the quality of life in Hamilton, and find common
ground to make progress. His charter also included a call
for developing "A City of Trails" and promised
to "promote our existing trail system".
In
a letter faxed to the Mayor on January 25, Friends' Chair
Joe Minor put forward "some preliminary ideas for practical
steps which we hope that Friends of Red Hill Valley can
pursue in cooperation with the new City in order to realize
some of these goals.
Dr.
Minor noted: "The utility and attractiveness of the
valley trails would be very much enhanced by the addition
of some basic amenities such as benches, picnic tables and
portable washrooms. The additional circulation of information
to the public about the trail system would also be quite
helpful, along with the installation of signage where major
streets cross the valley. With the cooperation and endorsement
of the City, we believe that Friends of Red Hill is in a
good position to seek funding for such improvements from
foundations and other sources, including our membership."
Dr.
Minor asked for a meeting between Friends and City officials
to discuss these practical proposals. His letter also thanked
the City "for asking us to provide leaders for two
public walks in Red Hill Valley as part of this year's Winterfest
celebrations" and issued an invitation to the Mayor
and members of Council " to take this opportunity to
visit the Valley by participating in one of these walks".
The walks are scheduled for 11 am on both Saturday, February
3 and Sunday February 4 and begin from the parking lot of
Rosedale Arena.
