Jubilee
Focuses on the Environment
The
Canadian Ecumenical Jubilee Initiative (CEJI) is encouraging
churches across Canada to renew the earth and to show concern
for the environment as part of the millenium celebration.
This is part of an ecumenical response to Jubilee, a practice
started in the medieval church. Jubilee calls believers
to renew society and creation once a generation. It is based
on the Hebrew biblical text, Leviticus.
The
CEJI is involved in a three-year Jubilee project. In 1998-99
the focus was on freeing the Third World from debt. Over
the past year the project drew attention to the growing
gap between the rich and the poor. This month the focus
turns to the environment.
Some
of the churches involved in the CEJI include Anglican, Catholic,
United and Presbyterian in addition to many community and
non-government organizations.
A
Hamilton committee is now organizing a special Jubilee event
to honour our environment and to explore the link between
spirituality and nature. It hopes to reach hundreds of church-goers
to get them thinking about the environment and exploring
local environmental issues. One of the main events will
be an ecumenical service in May in the Red Hill Valley.
If
you or your congregation would like more information about
this event, or would like to volunteer to help make it a
success, please call Peigi Rockwell at 527-0003.
