News Release For Immediate Release 63 Ontario Youth Awarded Scholarships At Boys and Girls Clubs of Ontario Awards Ceremony, Sponsored By the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario - $150,000 distributed to Ontario Youth! At a special awards ceremony on Sunday, November 2nd, at Atlantis Pavilions, Ontario Place, 63 young people from Boys and Girls Clubs across Ontario received post-secondary school scholarships for the 2003/2004 academic year. Doris Haas, Director, Sport & Recreation Branch, Ministry of Tourism & Recreation, addressed the recipients while Leslie Roberts of Global Television was the Master of Ceremonies.
Representatives from 11 corporate and private sponsors provided a total of $150000, in the form of scholarships, personally to the youth at the awards ceremony. Sponsors include Campbell Company of Canada, Future Shop, the Raptors Foundation, The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario, the Kiwanis Club of Toronto Foundation, Bishop Strachan School, CST Education Charity, the Allan Family, Dr. James J. Rice, Dr. Lorna Marsden, and the Family of John H. Brace. The award ceremony is sponsored by The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario.
In 1992, The Boys and Girls Clubs of Ontario established a scholarship fund to assist young students achieve their
academic goals. From an initial grant of $4,800 and 6 awards, the program has grown to $150,000 in donations. To date
almost $550,000 has been given out to 456 youth across Ontario.
This year's financial support will allow recipients to attend college or university in this struggling double-cohort year. Award recipients for 2003 come from Brampton, Brantford, Hamilton, Kingston, Lindsay, London, Newmarket, Niagara, Oshawa, Ottawa, Thunder Bay, and the Greater Toronto Area.
