Camp Wheeler

Camp wheeler is a place we can go to get away from the noise of the
city........
Every year we travel that ever so long drive, down all the busy highways and
back roads to a place we call home. Camp Wheeler is located on the north shore of
Lake Kabakwa. About a four hour drive from Hamilton, Ontario. It is owned by the
26th Hamilton Scout group and takes many hours of hard work to maintain. We would
like to thank all of the volunteers that take the time out of their busy
schedules to make the camp possible.
The Camp:
Camp Wheeler is located on Lake Kabakwa (Peach) off of Highway 35 between
Minden & Dorset in the Haliburton Highlands. The Camp itself is
approximately 4 hectares (10 acres) of waterfront and bush property. Buildings
at Camp Wheeler include a Dining Hall with Kitchen, Staff Lodge, 2 Cabins with
hydro for staff, 7 Sleeping Cabins that hold eight people each without hydro,
and a Shower House. Full laundry service is available. Privies are used for all
campers. The Camp has two swimming areas, one for non-swimmers that is
approximately 1 metre (3 feet) deep, the other area for swimmers, that is
approximately 2 metres (6 feet) deep. Both swimming areas are buoyed and have
floating docks. There are canoes, rowboats, archery range, sports field, and a
sandpit for horseshoes or volleyball. Other areas include a Chapel among the
Pines, Campfire Circle and Flagpole.
The Experience:
Camp Wheeler offers a unique blend of traditional and modern Scouting
activities. Camp programs are based on the Scouting Promise and Law, and youth
are encouraged to participate fully at all times. Campers develop outdoor
skills, leadership abilities, and confidence in themselves. As well, they will
experience the fun and excitement that creates lifelong friendships and
cherished memories.
History:
Camp Wheeler is owned and operated by the 26th Hamilton Scout
Group. Members of the Group founded Camp Wheeler in 1949 and the Camp was
constructed by the youth of the Group. Youth and adult volunteers complete the
ongoing maintenance and operations of the Camp. The camp fees are used for the
operation of Camp Wheeler. Capital expenditures are met through funds raised by
our Group and any donations made to our Group.
In the 1930’s, Lewis Wheeler had a dream that when he got rich he would buy
a Camp for the Group. Lewis was killed during World War II on April 25, 1945 in
Germany. Camp Wheeler is named in his memory. In the fall of 1949, the older
Scouts reminisced about that summer’s camp and canoe trip. During this meeting
it was asked "Why don’t we buy a piece of land up near the Park
(Algonquin), the younger Scouts can go camping and the older Scouts can go
canoeing?" On the Thanksgiving weekend in 1949, Bob Rhem and Harry Bryant
ventured north to look at a few pieces of land offered for sale by the Ontario
Government. Camp Wheeler was purchased, and the first annual Scout Camp was in
1950, followed by the first annual Cub Camp in 1951. There have also been many
Venturer and Rover Camps and Canoe Trips at Camp Wheeler,
and weekend Camps for the Beavers started in 1981.
