| The following are
instructions on how to manually set up your email account. It is
recommended that you print a copy of this page for future
reference.
Note: The images below might be slightly different than what you see on your computer, depending on your operating system and version of Outlook Express. These directions only apply to Outlook Express (not Outlook).
- Start up Outlook Express.

- A welcome screen appears. If you are using Outlook Express for the first time, you might be taken directly into the ?Internet Setup Wizard?. If this is the case, please skip forward to step 5 of these instructions.

- Under the "Tools" menu, choose "Accounts".

- A new window entitled "Internet Accounts" appears. Click on the "Mail" tab to bring up the following screen, then click on "Add", and choose "Mail" from the popup menu (menu not shown).

- The "Internet Connection Wizard" appears. In the white box, enter your name as you would like others to see it, then click on the "Next >" button at the bottom of the window.

- In the next screen, enter your email address. Click "Next >" to continue.

- Now enter your server information. When finished, click on "Next >".
Your incoming mail server is a POP3 server.
POP server: pop.hwcn.org
SMTP server:
.... For dial-up connections: smtp.hwcn.org
.... For high speed connections: smtp.pppoe.ca

IMPORTANT NOTE FOR
HIGH SPEED (DSL) USERS
: Instead
of using 'smtp.hwcn.org' as shown above, please set the outgoing mail
server name to '
smtp.pppoe.ca
'.
(Advanced users: yes, we do provide IMAP service. Select IMAP server, and use imap.hwcn.org as your incoming server.)
- The next screen asks you for your user id and password. Your ?account name? is your HWCN user id. Your password is the password you use for dialing up to the HWCN. Important: if you setup a custom e-mail alias (address) the wizard will helpfully fill it in as your ?Account Name?. Remove the alias and enter your user id. When finished, click on "Next >".

- Click on "Finish".

- If you started the Setup Wizard from the Internet Accounts dialog box, you will now see the "Internet Accounts" screen, which now shows your pop.hwcn.org account. This is proper. If you do not see the "Internet Accounts" screen (similar to the image shown in step 4), select "Tools" from the menu, and choose "Accounts" (as in step 3).
- Click on the name of the account that you just created (pop.hwcn.org) and then click on "Properties".

- A dialogue box will appear with five tabs across the top. Click on the "Connection" tab. Place a check mark beside "Always connect to this account using:" and then select your HWCN connection from the drop down list. Click "Apply".

- Click on the "Advanced" tab. You will want to make sure that there is not a check mark beside "Leave a copy of messages" on server. Click on "OK". Your email account has been set up and you can send and receive email through the HWCN servers.

- To help prevent infecting your computer with any viruses received by e-mail, Outlook Express 6 prevents you from saving or opening any attached file (attachment) that could be infected with a virus. To open or save an attachment you must turn off this feature. To do this, go into "Tools", "Options" and click on the "Security" tab. Uncheck the box that says "Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus."
Only turn off this feature when you are expecting this attachment from a known sender. Turn this security feature on again after saving your attachment. Failure to do so will put you at serious risk of contracting and spreading viruses and may result in damage to your computer.
